Zhongnan Xu

Biography

Zhongnan Xu grew up in Portland, OR. From 2007-2010, he attended the University of Michigan — Ann Arbor, where he studied chemical engineering. During his time there, he worked in the research groups of Johannes Schwank and Suljo Linic, developing microwave characterization techniques of supported catalysts and studying plasmonic Ag nanoparticles. Upon graduation in 2010, Zhongnan joined the Kitchin group at CMU studying transition metal oxide (TMO) stability and activity using density functional theory (DFT). In 2016, Zhongnan joined Paul Voyle’s and Dane Morgan’s group as a postdoctoral researcher.

Research Interests

Zhongnan is currently developing computational tools for determining the structure and composition of real nano-particles. These tools combine the atomic-scale resolution techniques of the Voyles group and structure determination tools of the Morgan group. The overall goal is to identify active sites of highly active nano-particles.
